L'Anse Au Loup is a French name meaning "Cove of Wolves". It has a population of 600 and is located along the north shore of the Strait of Belle Isle (a body of water separating the landmass of Labrador from the island of Newfoundland).

The community was initially established by the French in the early 1700's but was later settled by the English, Scots and the Irish. A thriving fishing and sealing industry was established in L'Anse Au Loup by an English company, Noble and Pinson, as early as 1778. The fishery continues to constitute a strong part of the economy. The Labrador Fishermen's Union Shrimp Company Ltd. has its headquarters in L'Anse au Loup and is the major employer in the Labrador Straits.
